- W62489148 abstract "This chapter presents the conceptual framework of the optimal control model for perceptual-motor performance to illustrate the potential correspondences between it and the concepts of information processing in skills. The environmental and behavioral specifications that the model uses describe the components of a theory of skill. The model also has the potential, if used in conjunction with empirical work formulated in the context of the model, to illuminate further understanding of skill acquisition. The spurt in theory development in motor performance and motor learning has produced largely qualitative theories. These theories permit the formulation of alternative hypotheses and make it possible to accept or reject the hypotheses on the basis of empirical data. One highly developed formalism that appears to be uniquely applicable to the study and representation of motor performance is that of optimal control theory. The leverage of optimal control theory to model human performance derives from one fundamental assumption, that is, a well-trained subject will act in a near-optimal manner that is contingent on his internal limitations and his understanding of the task. The appropriateness of this assumption has been evaluated repeatedly in the studies of manual control systems and has been shown to be remarkably robust." @default.
