- W625252022 abstract "This chapter discusses high-sensitivity amperometric biosensor for atmospheric sulfur dioxide determination. Rapid, precise, simple, and economic estimation techniques for sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere are strongly required in the environmental analysis, because this pollutant is one of the main sources of acid rain. A system, for the continuous sampling of gaseous sulfur dioxide and monitoring it as sulfite by a high sensitivity amperometric biosensor was developed. The sensitivity of this system is in the part per trillion ranges. The large surface of the electrode, and the hydrophilic matrix that offers a favorable environment to the biological component, permit the achievement of a very high electrochemical efficiency. Various mediators were tested as electron acceptors to decrease the interferences due to electroactive constituents present in the atmosphere, and to diminish the background current enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio. Working conditions to avoid reaction and interferences with other pollutants present in the atmosphere are given and discussed." @default.
