- W625549080 abstract "Can architecture make us happy? nn Can it give us pleasure and a better understanding of what life is? nn As an initial response, it is hard to imagine that inanimate objects, like buildings, can have such possibility: they do not respond to tentative questions or comfort us with sweet words. Yet like living creatures, they are powerless against time: their paint peels, they exude strange smells, they creak and groan like their bones are tired and eventually, they fall down. nn The design of buildings can, metaphorically, talk to us about life. As will be argued in this thesis, architecture can be designed to remind us of certain things, perhaps through niches and intimate spaces, the smell of new carpets or a sunny balcony. Over time buildings can show signs of life. They age as their occupants do and hold the memories of what used to be long after their occupantsr departure. In their quiet demeanour, buildings can only offer these memories to us, and it is up to us to actively apprehend them. This reminder of the past can evoke certain emotions which can be pleasant to apprehend and by their relationship to reality, is argued to have the capacity to provide us a better understanding of life. nn Being a topic that is subject to many complexities, it should be noted that the architecture here described is only an ideal and is unlikely to apply to all circumstances. Based on the arguments of Gordon Graham and John Haldane, the possibility of great art to enhance an understanding of life through aesthetics will be examined. nn" @default.
