- W626089613 abstract "The thesis aims to analyze the figure of the Marquis Pio Enea Obizzi II ( Padua, 1592-1674) in his role as the creator and organizer of chivalric festivals.Three tournaments have been specifically examined through the comparative study of contemporary sources and of the critical bibliography found. The three “opera-torneo” that have been chosen are: Ermiona, held in Padua in 1636 in the Sala dello Stallone in Prato della Valle; Furori di Venere, staged in Bologna in the Sala del Podesta in 1639 and Amor pudico performed in Padua in 1643, in a specially built theatre in Piazza dei Signori. A whole chapter of the thesis has been devoted to each of these events accompanied also by iconographic evidence. The formation and career of the Marquis as an expert in tournaments has been traced through the research. The first chapter of this thesis is about his work in some of the festive events dating back to 1616 in Florence and 1617 in Finale Emilia. The critical study and the depth of contemporary evidence allowed to draw a perfect location on the professionalism of Obizzi. These were mainly chronicles and correspondence but in some cases some other material has been analysed. His experience which develops from the first to the the fourth decade of the Seventeenth century shows his wide range of skills and knowledge that make him much more than a simple tournament organizer. The result is a very competent personality that coordinates many of the aspect of the spectacular plays including the artistic one and its set up.Obizzi worked with Engr. Alfonso Rivarola, known as Chenda (Ferrara, 1591-1640 ) for the performances of 1636 and 1639. Chenda was in charge of the implementation of the stage machinery. He also designed the show set up and the spaces for the audience. Since it was very difficult to retrieve some material about Chenda, an entire section of this work has been devoted to his important figure. This has been done through a brief analysis of some of the shows he set up between 1628 and 1639.The apparatus of the thesis contain a biographical note of Pio Enea II degli Obizzi and some reports of those mistakes handed down by historians. A documentary appendix in which we provide the transcription of many documents (both press and manuscripts) is also included." @default.
