- W626322015 abstract "The viability of many road improvements hinge on a reduction in vehicle operating costs. Fuel consumption is an important component of these costs. A detailed power based model is described which is suitable for estimating the fuel consumption of vehicles ranging from 1 tonne cars to 40 tonne articulated trucks. An instantaneous and four mode elemental form of the model are presented which allow it to be used with vehicle speed and road geometry data typically available from road evaluation type models. The model only requires a small number of easily obtainable vehicle parameters, with default values being supplied for other optionally required parameters. Examples of the use of the model for estimating the effect on fuel consumption of changes in vertical alignment, road curvature (including deceleration and acceleration) and road surface roughness are given. The vehicle fleet is divided into classes and vehicle parameters for, and typical proportions of vehicles in each class are given (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 808936." @default.
