- W626803836 abstract "There is increasing interest in replacing steel reinforcement in concrete by advanced composites, generally known as FRPs (Fibre-Reinforced Plastics or Fibre-Reinforced Polymers). FRPs consist of high-modulus fibres embedded in a suitable resin, and are being used increasingly to repair and strengthen concrete bridges. This report reviews the use of FRPs in various applications, identifies suitable design approaches where they have been developed, and indicates areas requiring further research and development. Information is given about typical properties of the fibres, resins, and composite materials, and manufacturing methods are reviewed. Worldwide, over 30 road bridges and footbridges are fully or partly prestressed with FRP material; in North America, several replacement bridge decks have been constructed with FRP reinforcement. FRP has been used for the stays of a few cable-stayed bridges. There is a potential for using FRP permanent formwork, especially for constructing columns. There is rapidly growing interest in using externally bonded FRP materials to increase the capacity of beams, slabs, and columns. There has been limited use of FRP tendons for strengthening structures. FRP has also been used in enclosure systems, especially for steel structures. Several footbridges and short-span road bridges have been built wholly from composites." @default.
