This article discusses the pivotal role of the economic pillar in allowing the implementation of the environmental and social pillars. Economic action is a priority goal for German transit operator Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). As an example, BVG has worked to reduce its energy costs within a framework that includes a comprehensive restructuring program. The company has worked with a partner to change its electrical supplier and to choose a new form of procurement. BVG buys its electricity every quarter through an accountancy grid management system that equalizes the difference between the volume of electricity purchased and the actual volume of electricity consumed. One advantage of this kind of schedule-related procurement is that many overhead costs are taken out of the equation. BVG's partnership has resulted in a year-on-year savings of over EUR 10 million. This money has been reinvested in the other two spheres of sustainability." @default.
