The ecological characteristics of An. sundaicus are diversified as to time and/or the area as reported by different investigators. Here, some characteristics such as larval habitat, seasonal prevalence, biting behavior and DDT resistance are reviewed, and the significance of the diversity of each characteristic is discussed. The common characteristics of An. sundaicus found in all areas and times were limited as follows the larvae need stagnant water with a definite range of salinity and plenty of sunlight, and the adults feed on a blood meal at night. Other characteristics were somewhat different. The diversities of seasonal prevalence and DDT resistance of the mosquito were well explained by the differences in habitat conditions and their fluctuation patterns, and by the histories of genetical selections through DDT spraying, respectively. While, the diversities of biting behavior such as endo-exophagy, host selection etc. might not be explained by so simple. For example, though there are some reports which mention the genetic change in the anthropophily of An. sundaicus, the change is possibly only an appearance because of the host preference expressed by human blood index. This is caused by a relative change in number of feeding hosts such as human and monkey. Even if the diversity is genetically caused, what is unknown about An. sundaicus is whether the host-selective behavior changes qualitatively from anthropophily to zoophily (or its reverse) within the individual mosquito, or changes quantitatively from strong anthropophily to a weak one (or its reverse) as a characteristic of each individual mosquito.
