- W627548288 abstract "The effect of selected temperature-photoperiod re gimes on the initiation of oviposition in Sitona hispidulus was de termined in growth chambers. The initiation of oviposition in non ovipositing, oversummering female S. hispidulus was dependent upon a reduction in temperature and was slightly affected by re duced photoperiod. The clover root curculio, Sitona hispidulus (F.), is a pest of forage le gumes, principally alfalfa and the clovers. The principal damage to the plant is caused by the larvae feeding on the nodules, lateral roots and taproot (Bigger, 1930). The resulting lesions predispose the plant to the entrance of pathogens (Graham and Newton, 1959 and Dickason et al., 1968). In Kentucky adults emerge from pupae in June, feed, and actively seek out oversummering sites by crawling. These adults remain quiescent until late-August at which time their activity increases and they begin to feed, mate, and fly. Oviposition begins about mid-September and continues until colder weather occurs (usually November). Oviposition resumes in early spring and continues until early June. A portion of the fall-oviposited eggs accumulate enough heat units to hatch in the fall in Kentucky. This probably allows some larval feeding damage to occur to the root systems prior to overwintering. If the initiation of oviposition is influenced by temperature and/or photoperiod, it may be possible to predict when oviposition begins by monitoring these factors, and thus, allow one to determine if eggs are present early enough to accumulate the required number of heat units to allow hatching before winter. The purpose of this study was to determine whether temperature and/or photoperiod affected the initiation of oviposition in S. hispidulus. This was done by exposing non-ovipositing, oversummering adults to various tem perature/photoperiod regimes and monitoring oviposition." @default.
