- W627612257 abstract "The author describes a tour of the tramways of Strasbourg, France. The long and wide low-floor vehicles offer a fast and smooth ride over grassed tracks. Trams have priority at all traffic signals and move fast. Trams have access to the historic city, whilst cars only have limited access. The background to the tramway in Strasbourg, which opened in 1994, is outlined. There are four tram lines, made up of two groups, each consisting of one pair of two mainly overlapping lines. Lines A and D run north-south and lines B and C run east-west. All lines pass through Homme de Fer in central Strasbourg. The system is standard-gauge, double track and there are no underpasses or flyovers. The public transport operator is Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS). The companies involved in the planning and design of the tramway are outlined. The design of the Eurotram is described. New developments include the ordering of 45 m low-floor trams, the creation of a fifth tram line and the creation of a tram-train." @default.
