- W628156762 abstract "Land use analysis, which involves the quantification, often over time, of natural areas and the areas of land used for agronomy and forestry, plus ecology, economics, and marketing, must be interdisciplinary, quantitative, and objective, while still representing accurately an extremely complex problem. Remote sensing (RS) can play an active role in the information technology packages aimed at assisting multidisciplinary teams in this task. Remote sensing, with its many platforms, from satellite to airborne, its many sensors, from photographic to hyperspectral, and its wide range of time coverage, can provide an assortment of imagery needed to assess land cover and land use, but only if the correct tools are used for the correct questions. This chapter provides an introduction to those tools and their uses. It reviews the historical development of RS and categorizes the tools available and some of their characteristics. It also examines the historical applications of remote sensing to the assessment of forest cover and land use for all of Costa Rica. It is important to emphasize the necessity of perfect geometric matching of the images for analyses." @default.
