- W628331410 abstract "Pedestrian accident rates are, as we know, higher for children than they are for teenagers or for adults; behaviour is generally considered to be the primary factor. In order to remedy this state of fact, education, and more particularly school education, has always been granted a major role. Other types of action, such as urban planning improvements, information to drivers or parents, seem to have been of a much more limited scope in the development of preventive policies. If a change in children's behaviour is to be obtained, education certainly stands out as a privileged mean. But it is possible to change children's behaviour to make it more reliable? Can education deeply change the behavioural variables interacting in the pedestrain's behaviour? Are those variables of such a nature to be changed by education? In a first approach to this problem, we have tried to compare the visual scanning strategies used by children and by adults, in carrying out the task of crossing various types of streets. This experiment was conducted in a simulated situation, and through the recording of eye movements. The results clearly pointed out that children concentrate their scanning points on the crossing area itself, while adults' visual scanning also embraces the whole of other areas where visual supervision has to be undertaken. Given the role played by cognitive and genetic factors in visual capacities, our communication will attempt to analyse the results of this experiment so as to define to what degree learning can be achieved in the framework of education to road safety. This will allow US to consider the limits and possibilities of children's education to road safety.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 815404." @default.
