- W628661618 abstract "The objective of this article is to examine the future of the as a mode of transportation in the United States. Bicycle sales increased from only 3.7 million in 1960 to 6.9 million in 1970 and reached approximately 15 million by 1973. Since that time, however sales have fallen to an estimated 7.7 million for 1975. Does this mean that the bicycle boom was a fad like the hula hoop rather than a significant long-term transportation development? Will the estimated 75 million bicycles in the United States really be used for genuine transportation purposes, or will they stand idle except for an occasional ride around the block? What is the future of the as a mode of transportation in the United States? This article examines these questions and the related one of what has been done to provide adequate facilities. One of the conclusions regarding the recent slump in sales is that it is probably a temporary phenomenon related to the recession. If adequate facilities are provided, ownership and usage should continue to increase and make a significant contribution in satisfying the nation's transportation needs." @default.
