- W628739907 abstract "Deep well hydraulic fracturing (i.e., fracking) is becoming an increasingly common way of extracting petroleum or natural gas. However, the fracking process requires heavy drilling equipment and massive amounts of water brought in by trucks, which can put a significant strain on rural roads that were not constructed to withstand such heavy traffic loads. This article describes how the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation worked with energy companies to upgrade the roads. Energy companies with stakes in the Marcellus and Utica deep shale gas reserve development helped pay for upgrades on the rural highways and secondary roads they needed to access for fracking. A total of 45 miles of roads were rehabilitated. Full-depth reclamation was used to dry grind the existing asphalt road and a portion of the sub-base material. A second pass with a reclaimer/stabilizer blended portland cement and water with the pulverized material to create a stabilized base for fresh asphalt. A total of three to four passes were made to thoroughly reclaim the severely deteriorated road. Following the work done by the reclaimer/stabilizer, a padfoot roller provided preliminary compaction. This was followed by a grader to establish grade for the new road surface. Although the grade at some points of the previous road surface had been as high as 12%, the specification for the new road called for a maximum 6% grade. A smooth drum roller was used to finish before doing the stabilization. After a nearly five-day curing period, an average of 5 to 8 inches of asphalt was paved over the stabilized base material.
