- W629339624 abstract "The experiences are described of several highway departments and other users of plastic filter fabrics. The fabric has been used in longitudinal subsurface drains beneath roadway shoulders. The original plan in an Illinois project calling for a dual-media trench was abandoned, and the drain was successfully protected with Mirafi 140 filter fabric. In another Illinois project Typar fabric was used to line a trench in the construction of a highway through wet soil. Again, no pipe was needed in the trench and the drain has been a complete success. Further experiences in Illinois and Alabama are also quoted. The fabric has also been used in the construction of access roads to storage areas constructed on soft ground. In Louisiana, Typar filter fabric was laid on a blanket of reef shells on gumbo clay, and reef shell were dumped on the top of the fabric. Filter fabric will be used to ease embankment construction through swampy area. In this project, Mirafi 140 fabric will be placed directly on the muck, with an oyster shell embankment directly on top. The fabric will prevent several inches of shell from sinking into the muck. In superhighway construction, it is noted that if a filter fabric were first laid down on the soil, and the aggregate spread on it, then the fabric would prevent soil particles migrating into the aggregate. The use of fabric to prevent reflective cracking, controlling erosion and sediment runoff from construction sites, and in the development of industrial sites are also described." @default.
