- W63060231 abstract "Hormonal and vitamin imbalances that cause malaise or even pass unnoticed in postnatal life may have a disastrous effect on the developing fetus. Early fetal development depends to a certain extent on hormones supplied by the maternal endocrine organs, on the placenta, and on vitamins and other food factors derived from the maternal blood supply. The earliest growth and differentiation of endocrine glands is independent of stimulation by other fetal glands, but prenatal maturation requires the presence of a fully functional hormonal network. Vitamins are as essential for the synthesis and operation of prenatal hormones as they are for postnatal hormones. Such an assumption is supported by the abnormalities of endocrine development and function found in animals partly or completely deprived of vitamins during the course of fetal life. The absence of the vitamin-containing coenzymes required for biochemical sequences in fetal organogenesis and metabolism has far-reaching effects. Many of the experimentally induced vitamin deficiencies cause malformations identical with those reputed to be hereditary in origin. There is a marked resemblance between the pattern of congenital defects produced by hormonal deficiency and that produced by vitamin deficiencies. This chapter discusses these deficiencies. It presents the pathogenesis of single vitamin deficiencies. The chapter also examines the role of hormones in prenatal development." @default.
