- W63089985 abstract "This chapter discusses the genesis of idea of universal college and its need in present context. Comenius also symbolized learning as a light, dispelling the darkness of ignorance and social injustice. Comenius envisaged a series of institutions from The School of the Mother's Knee to university. But it does not stop there. The ideas of Comenius created widespread interest, and he was invited to come to England in 1641 to put his scheme into practice. He was soon persuaded that the task was beyond the powers of one man, and so the idea of a universal or pansophic college was born. Comenius realized that the vast amount of new knowledge that these discoveries brought to light must be fed back into Europe and that knowledge from Europe must be transmitted to the new lands. Comenius saw the Universal College as the apex of the whole system of education, the fountain head that would promote, “the improvement of all human affairs, in all persons and everywhere.” In this context, recently, Professor J. D. Bernal propagated the idea of universal college by saying, “It is in the nature of the multifarious advance of science that ideas which appear in one field and may not have very much effect or relevance in that field might be extremely illuminating in another, but they hardly ever get there and the same discovery has to be made over and over again. It requires something more than the multiplicity of congresses, societies, and publications which organizations such as the International Council of Scientific Unions.”" @default.
