- W631172571 abstract "Safety of buses is one of the major challenges to managers, engineers, and planners of the transportation network. Although there is a considerable amount of literature on modelling crash severity, a few researchers have addressed the severity of crashes involving buses. Furthermore, previous works have not considered the differences between characteristics of urban and rural bus crashes in their analyses. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the factors affecting the severity of bus crashes by comparing urban and rural scenarios distinctly. A database of all crashes involving at least one bus, reported to Iran’s law enforcement agencies during the years 2009-2010, is utilized to estimate an ordered logit model of bus crash severity. In order to better understand the effect of variables on buses’ crash severity and the comparison between urban and rural roads, the value of pseudo-elasticity has also been calculated for all the variables in each model. Various characteristics of driver, vehicle, roadway, and crash condition were found to have an influence on the bus crash severity. The results show that bus crash occurrence during dawn time, collision with a pedestrian, violating the traffic rules by the driver, speeding, bus driver age being above 60 and motorcycle or bicycle crash are the most important variables that affect both urban and rural bus crash severity. In case of urban roads, factors such as driving at night, traffic signs imperfections, vision obstructions, dry pavements, sideswipe crashes, driving in the opposite direction, loss of control, insufficient driving skills, and running the red light increase the crash severity. Furthermore, crash severity is exacerbated in highways and intersections. For rural roads, dusk times, weekends, curved level roads, residential areas, snowy weather, fatigue and sleepiness of the driver, the presence of road imperfections, overturning, crashes involving heavy vehicles, overtaking, and lane deviation and inattention to front are factors associated with an increase in crash severity." @default.
