- W631226823 abstract "This article, the third in a four-part series describes the main systems in use in the UK providing guidance on the effectiveness of these systems in reducing ground movements. Two groups are considered; they are based on proprietary systems such as hydraulic struts and shields or drag boxes. Hydraulic shoring systems are made from lightweight high strength aluminium alloy with hydraulic cylinders which are used to brace the shoring rails apart, either directly on to the ground or on to timber or steel trench sheets. Trench shields are protective metal boxes and are not normally used to support the sides of the trench but to provide safety for personnel in the trench. Sliding rail or plate lining systems employ solid panels sliding into support rails driven vertically into the trench line. The main disadvantage of both systems is that crossing services can interfere with the lining route. Two other special proprietary systems are outlined, one system is completely self-contained and self-propelled with a facility for compacting backfill; the other is capable of accommodating crossing services.
