- W631639400 abstract "The paper briefly describes investigations carried out to provide quantitative data on the trade-off between the standards of construction and the maintenance of roads in the state of Kuwait. The main objectives of these investigations are (1) to determine the effectiveness of existing level control procedures used in road construction in achieving the required thickness and surface evenness, (2) to determine the structural role of various layers using both static and dynamic tests, and (3) to develop pavement performance prediction models based on the subgrade bearing capacity. Measurements of surface profiles are being conducted at the construction stage using Mays meter. Layer thicknesses are measured on cores. Dynamic deflection measurements are undertaken using the dynaflect. Analysis of the measurements on two typical road projects showed that the mean layer thickness was generally at or below the specified level. The corresponding percentages for the individual layers ranged from 75 to 95 percent. The thickness of the surfacing layer was ten percent below the lower limit requirement. Unevenness in the lower layers appears to affect the finished road profile. This shows that better control of the surface level of subbases would improve riding quality. The second part of the paper briefly describes the use of the structural number concept developed during the AASHTO road test for characterising pavement performance. In this study Kuwait is assumed to be the standard environment and only the effect of subgrade strength is taken into account in the modification of the structural number.
