- W632201775 abstract "The article examines the ways in which interactions between microbes and paint can take place. The most important are the degredation of liquid water-based paints within the can, the growth of algae on applied paint and colonisation of paint film by microfungi. The authors outline the mechanism of each type of defect and concentrate on the growth of fungi in applied paint films. The relationship between fungal growth and corrosion is examined. Methods of testing the fungus-resistance of paint films and the incorporation of fungicides are discussed. An examination of fungal growth of the Tinsley Viaduct is given as an example. More than 20 species of mould were discovered although Sopp and Fres de Vries appeared to be dominant. The methods of removing the contaminating growth and debris and applying a fungal-resistant paint film are explained. Precautions were taken to reduce the risk of allergic reaction of workers within the box-girders. Results are given of tests for fungal growth on paints already in use on bridges. Evidence showed that the most suitable paint contained zinc oxide, zinc chromate and phenolic resin/fungoil. /TRRL/" @default.
