- W632257229 abstract "This report briefly describes the review of published works on modelling truck and bus fuel consumption and reports on the adaption and evaluation of a US (NHSTA) model called 'HEVSIM'. This led to the decision to construct a less complex model, based on sound engineering (physics) principles that describe the flow of energy to the wheels via the transmission, accounting for losses in the various components and the drag forces on the vehicle. Calculation of the fuel consumed to accomplish a particular driving condition or task allows the L/100km or miles per gallon to be estimated. The model, called 'TABESAM', also can report a wide range of information helpful to heavy vehicle operators or vehicle design engineers, by identifying where the fuel energy goes to, and thus aiding in the refinement of vehicle specification or design. Validation tests are reported in which the model is compared with HEVSIM when configured for bus operation. In general the model predictions compared favorably, with overall fuel consumption agreeing to within 4 per cent. When the experimental tests on the International Harvester S2760 trucks were compared with predictions, it was found that the model tended to over predict the fuel consumption measurements by up to 8 per cent. Much of this difference could be attributed to uncertainties in the experimental conditions such as wind speed, road and track grades etc. The part of the comparison pertaining to the Anglesea proving ground brake test circuit results, for which stop start manoeuvres were performed, and for which the wind and grade data were well documented, resulted in prediction agreeing with experiment to within 1 per cent. Overall, the trends predicted by the model for the 17 vehicle configurations were in very good agreement with experimental measurements. The model predicted about 98 per cent of the observed variation in the experimental data. It was an objective of the project to make the model available to truck operators and manufacturers as a tool to assist in heavy vehicle fuel efficiency, performance and, with appropriate component cost inputs, route operating costs." @default.
