- W632804913 abstract "This article examines some of the different approaches to using traffic calming to make streets safer for pedestrians. York City Council was one of the first British local authorities to start traffic calming schemes. The Council responded to public demand for them, but found that complaints were made, especially by drivers of emergency vehicles, after the schemes were installed. After trying several different methods of slowing traffic, York eventually used a standard speed cushion, 3.5m long, 1.6m wide, and 65mm high, with a one in eight front and one in four side. Devon County Council was another pioneer, with its package in the city of Exeter, which now has 22 schemes. After considerable experimentation with chicanes and footway build-outs, Exeter has now chosen 75mm high flat brick-topped road humps, with 1 in 15 gradients, as the most effective speed reducers. This is the best compromise between slowing traffic and access to public service vehicles. Like many other local authorities, Westminster City Council in London has many potential traffic calming schemes, but is finding it difficult to meet their costs. It is now examining area-wide environmental improvement schemes. Manchester City Council has had over 500 applications for schemes, prioritised mainly to reduce accidents and traffic flows." @default.
