- W633048372 abstract "Asphalt release agents are used to solve the problem of asphalt mixtures sticking to truck beds during transport from asphalt plant to field. Health concerns on workers arise when handling the release agents, either through skin contact or through inhalation of emissions. Chemical characterization of the release agents is important for estimation of health aspects. The thesis consists of a literature review and experimental studies on four asphalt release agents used in Swedish industry, diesel, bio-diesel 101, RME and Asfalt AF:1. In literature review, general classification, chemical characterization and potential health effects of the commercial products are described. General aspects of air sampling techniques and analytical methods are introduced. Possible methodologies for investigation of asphalt release agents are discussed and proposed. The experimental part deals with chemical characterization of the four asphalt release agents. Chemical function groups and molecular weight distribution are determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy - Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS), respectively. General compositions of the agents are determined using Gas Chromatography - Mass health related analytes including monoaromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are analyzed quantitatively or semi-quantitatively. Fuming tendency is studied using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Head Space-Solid Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME) and detailed profiles of emitted compounds are obtained using HS-SPME.
