Sufficient inventory control is vital to achieve competitive edge. Organizations need to be able to digest the huge amount of information and make fast decisions to respond to changing global markets. To integrate and efficiently control this information into a seamless suite of business applications across the company, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have emerged as an enabling technology. Main focus in this report is challenges related to inventory management using ERP systems and how companies can gain benefits from utilizing the data already stored in a company’s ERP system. Based on a literature review this report describes and presents a logistics planning module named Inventory Planner. Through improvement proposals and automatic control of parameter values the system focus on efficient and continuous item control and try to address some of the challenges found related to inventory management and ERP systems. Built on Cloud Computing technology the system enables ERP data to be extracted from theERP system, processed, stored in the cloud and loaded back into the ERP system as updated parameter values. The system visualizes critical information on low performing items in a secureway through an intuitive and easy to use web interface. With an application placed in the cloud managed by the vendor, software updates are made more easily than traditional system updates. Based on the system description of Inventory Planner the report presents a static prototype which is further used to perform a case study. Main goal of the case study is to confirm the need for a new module with focus on a more efficient and continuous control of items and inventory levels. Results from the case study reveal that a lot of manually performed processes are needed in today’s system to support decision making. By offering the industry Inventory Planner these manually performed processes are handled more efficiently by the system which releases the user from time consuming processes. Findings confirm how Inventory Planner enables a more continuously control of items to ensure customer service and optimized inventory levels." @default.
