- W63384985 abstract "This paper offers an account of expatriate EFL teachers as postmodern paladins. Data come from a study of the professional life histories of EFL teachers in Poland. I argue that there are provocative parallels between EFL teachers and medieval knights errant, but that this comparison is tainted by the postmodern condition. Postmodernity is seen to involve a failure of grand narratives; an emphasis on plurality, difference and change, often for its own sake; a concern with marginality and with those traditionally marginalized in social or other ways; encounters that take place in marginal or border territory; and the valorization of surface appearances and simulacra. I use the image of the teacher as postmodern paladin to shed light on data from life history interviews with three experienced expatriate teachers; in particular, the image helps me to reveal deep-lying moral and political tensions inherent in the teachers' work. Finally, I suggest that EFL/ESL as a whole is a marginal occupation and that postmodern theory offers new and fruitful ways of conceptualizing important issues in language teaching." @default.
