- W634336675 abstract "One of the high points in the media coverage of 1807/2007 was Lola Young’s long article entitled ‘The Truth in Chains’, published in the Guardian on 15 March, on the brink of the Bicentennial carnival week.1 This constituted a brilliantly compressed, but not reduced, account of the different forces swirling within the culture wars, and inheritance debates, thrown up by the anniversary. Young clearly outlined how interest groups with axes to grind, and chips on their shoulders, could only see the opportunity of hijacking the event. She clearly saw through, with a weary wisdom, the manoeuvrings of New Labour. Here we had an insider explaining, while naming no names, why the jaw-breakingly dull, and safely impotent, hypocrisies of Blair and his official anniversary front man, John Prescott, MP for Hull, were so inevitable. There is no space to summarise her excellent general take on things here, but I do want to excise two of the central truths she enunciated, because they justify the following discussion. Firstly, she said: ‘Africa is still a blank space in most European people’s consciousnesses’, adding that ‘One downside of the commemorations is that the emphasis on enslavement reinforces the belief that there was no African history before European domination’. This fact, and it is a fact, has terribly destructive effects on how slavery is perceived throughout the Atlantic Diaspora. Secondly, she concludes simply that, ‘In popular public consciousness Wilberforce ended slavery’." @default.
