- W63449336 abstract "The creation of Pakistan was inspired by the need for a political structure and settlement in the subcontinent which would be in accord with the aspirations of all its peoples. The emergence of India and Pakistan as two separate States in 1947 was the outcome of the exercise by their peoples of their right of self-deteimination. The Muslims of the subcontinent were overwhelmingly in favour of a separate political existence, so that they could give free expression to their way of life. After extensive negotiations, it was agreed that the areas of the subcontinent where the Muslims were in majority /. p. in the West and the East of British India, should form Pakistan. Originally, there had been discussion as to whether there should be one or two Muslim States in the subcontinent but upon the initiative of leaders of Muslim Bengal, it was agreed that Pakistan would be composed pf both East Bengal and the four Muslim majority provinces in the West. The events of 1971 become all the more ironic and tragic because the suffering and sacrifices of the people of East Bengal for Pakistan were perhaps greater than that of the people of the four provinces in the West. Pakistan's short history shows that the people of East Pakistan became progressively disillusioned in the country they had done so much to establish. Primarily, this was due to the inability of successive Governments in Pakistan to alleviate the conditions of inhuman poverty and misery in the Eastern Province. Alienation was enhanced further by the oppressive political climate in the country during the era of the generals. The people of East Pakistan gave in, too readily perhaps, to the arguments about West Pakistan domination and exploitation. There was indeed exploitation but that was not limited to East Pakistan, it extended throughout the country, and was inherent in the 'Robber-Baron' of economic development adopted by the previous regimes.
