- W63574028 abstract "A sizeable percentage of undergraduate students enroll in U.S. business schools; yet, there is sparse published research on the educational aspirations and career goals of this select student body. To address this gap in the literature, a survey of undergraduate business students at The University of West Florida was conducted in the Fall semester of 2002. Of the total respondents (N = 150), 50 % plan to seek employment in their select field or business specialty after earning the bachelor's degree. The major fields of concentration are accounting, marketing, management, and information technology (IT); few students chose MIS as their selected field of study. The other half of our sample intend to pursue graduate education, with a majority planning on attaining either the MBA or accounting graduate degrees. Improving employment prospects and enhancing earned income were the major motivations for pursuing graduate degrees in the business fields. Introduction Over the years, there have periodically appeared some published studies on the career aspirations, expectations, and vocational satisfactions of business students nationwide. Soutar and Clarke (1983) studied business students' career preferences based on career 'value' such as achievement, creativity, power, and prestige. These authors found that most business students appeared to differentiate between careers in terms of entrepreneurial opportunities and social integrity. Martinez, Sedlacek, and Bachhuber (1987) reported that business graduates in the workforce were quite content in terms of job satisfaction but expressed a desire for information on specialized training in future career options. Miller, Heck, and Prior (1988) cautioned researchers to examine gender differences, with business school samples, based on Holland's theory of career choice. Contrary to this argument, Burke (1994), in his business school sample, found that men and women valued similar workplace characteristics and attached similar importance to work, family life, and home-care roles. More recently, Werbel (2000) studied the relationships among career exploration, job search intensity, and vocational search effectiveness. He found that job search intensity is the most important factor affecting initial job search effectiveness and initial financial compensation. Other factors such as interviewing skills and maintaining realistic expectations were found to enhance career exploration. The main purpose of the current research was to conduct an extensive survey of current undergraduate business students on their career aspirations. The focus was on two tracks: 1) those students planning to pursue further graduate education, and 2) those planning on entering the job market immediately after graduation. Methodology A basic information-gathering instrument was developed and distributed to four separate classes of College of Business undergraduate students at The University of West Florida (UWF) in Pensacola, Florida. The survey comprised a two-option section (Part A and Part B) to be completed based on the individual student's choice on whether to pursue further educational training, to seek employment, or pursue a combination of the two. The content for questions was based on prior survey work on business school students and on similar surveys conducted with Mathematics/Statistics and Psychology students at UWF in the recent past. Survey forms were distributed during class time in classes wherein the students of all three College of Business departments must enroll. Class selection ensured only one survey per student. Participation was optional and all data were considered confidential. Results and Discussion The data analyses were based on survey responses of 150 undergraduate business students. Of these, 50% planned on seeking full-time employment after graduation, 14% (N = 21) have intentions on pursuing graduate-level education, and 35% (N = 53) indicated a desire to pursue graduate degrees while employed. …" @default.
