- W636062021 abstract "The Minnesota Road Research project (Mn/ROAD) is a comprehensive pavement research project. It consists of a mainline transition roadway to carry live interstate traffic, and a low volume closed loop road used for controlled truck testing. A total of more than 4500 electronic sensors are embedded in the forty 150m-long pavement sections with each section having a unique design. This paper describes a preliminary theoretical study of vehicle dynamic response for a wide range of pavement roughness obtained from Mn/ROAD pavement sections. The theoretical study was based on a quarter-car model. The purpose of the paper was to theoretically compare the relative vehicle dynamic response for a wide range of road roughness. The study focused on how the vehicle dynamic reponse was affected by pavement roughness, vehicle speed and vehicle characteristics. Fourteen different pavement profiles with IRI (International Roughness Index) ranging from 0.89 to 6.06 m/km were simulated. Two statistic parameters called root mean square (RMS) of the vertical acceleration of the sprung mass and dynamic impact factor (DIF) of dynamic loads were applied to characterize vehicle ride comfort and dynamic load influence on pavements.
