- W63615601 abstract "This chapter focuses on large granular lymphocytes (LGL) that constitute a new cell lineage. Support to this hypothesis may come from the lack of evidence that LGL belong to other hemic lineages and the demonstration of a distinctive pattern of LGL maturation. LGL exhibit a lymphoid morphology and contain intracytoplasmic azurophilic—electron-dense—granules. The large majority of LGL have avid receptors for IgG. LGL share surface markers with the cells of the myelo–monocytic lineage and some antigens detected by monoclonal reagents. The experiments of Lohman–Matthes and colleagues are open to a variety of interpretations, ranging from the possibility that the NK activity that they measure is not exerted by LGL to the hypothesis that their suspensions contained both LGL and monocyte precursors. The availability of expanded LGL populations with immature features from lymphoproliferative disorders has permitted both the identification of the steps leading to the granule formation and of other phenotypic features attributable to immature LGL. Phylogeny studies would support the hypothesis that LGL are a separate lineage." @default.
