- W636762110 abstract "Updating and optimizing signal timings have been proven to reduce delay at signalized intersections. The Webster formulas - that use the critical lane method for green split estimation and delay minimization for optimal cycle lengths - were intended to be used for optimizing signal timing plans for fixed-time isolated intersections, balancing phase utilization and minimizing car delay when no spillbacks are present. However, these formulas are less appropriate for transportation systems when transit signal priority (TSP) is in place. Green split deviation caused by TSP strategies redistributes capacity at signalized intersections and could cause spillbacks on non-priority phases. The Webster signal settings are not valid for optimizing signal settings in multimodal transportation systems. The main goal of this paper is to propose signal setting formulas for isolated intersections that can be applied in practice when full transit signal priority is implemented. Linear regression for optimal cycle lengths and green splits are developed as a function of lost time, detector location, frequency of buses, critical intersection flow ratio and critical flow ratios of each phase. More than 34,200 parameter combinations were run in the new mesomodel CAPACITEL for two, three, and four phase signalized intersections. Compared to the Webster formulas the proposed formulas show a significant improvement in reducing vehicle and bus delay. Compared to Webster and Akcelik there is 39% and 29% less average vehicle delay and 53% and 22% less average bus delay respectively over 120 test cases." @default.
