- W636865013 abstract "In this study the morphology and distribution of 86 spore taxa, 29 saccate and asaccate pollen taxa, 62 dinoflagellate taxa and 11 acritarch taxa are discussed. The new acritarch genus Lucidium (type species Lucidium cometum designated below) is proposed. The diagnoses of the spore genera Appendicisporites and Plicatella are amplified to provide a means of separation of these two similar genera. The diagnosis of the dinoflagellate genus Cannosphaeropsis is amplified and that of Exochosphaeridium is emended. Two new spore species, 5 new dinoflagellate species and 4 new acritarch species are proposed. The thesis also includes the diagnosis of the saccate genus Phrixipollenites and of 5 saccate species published by the author in 1968. It was found that several species of microplankton form parts of a variation series between two or more end points. This is illustrated by the regular variation between Diconodinium glabrum and D.multispinum. Such forms have the same basic shape, but their sculpture varies from laevigate to finely granulate, finely spinate, and coarsely spinate. In such series species are delineated in terms of the variation. 2-4 µm thick sections of 28 species of microplankton were sectioned with an ultramicrotome to show layering of the cyst wall, 14 of these are illustrated. These sections showed a characteristic dense inner layer and porous outer layer in some genera including Eisenackia, and a reticulate structure between the endophragm and periphragm of representatives of the genus Gonyaulacysta was also noted. The correlative value of species with limited strati graphic ranges previously noted by Dettmann (1963) and Evans (1966a) are determined in the palynofloras studied from the Lower Cretaceous of the Eromanga and Surat Basins. In some cases these required emendment, such as in the case of Cyclosporites hughesii which ranges into younger strata than previously noted. The diagnostic species Coptospora paradoxa, whose range delineates the C. paradoxa Zone, is rare in the marine strata. However, the oldest occurrence of Cicatricosisporties pseudotripartitus was found to correspond to the oldest part of the strati graphic range of the C. paradoxa Zone. The restricted strati graphic ranges of several species of microplankton are established and compared to zones based on spores. The most useful microplankton species are Eisenackia spongos n.sp. (late Aptian), Dingodinium cerviculum and Muderongia tetracantha (late Aptian-early Albian, the latter ranging into slightly younger strata than the former), Diconodinium displicatum n.sp (basal-middle Albian) and Diconodinium glabrum (middle to late Albian). Stratigraphic units established by surface mapping in various parts of the Great Artesian Basin are compared, and correlated into the subsurface on electric and lithological logs of the wells studied. Comparison of biostratigraphic zones with these units enables a geological history of the area to be consturcted. The palaeogeography of the area is studied using remanie fossils to determine direction of land masses and provenance of sediments. The origins of miospores, dinoflagellates and acritarchs, the land, the sea and lakes or lagoons respectively, are considered in relation to their numbers in palynofloras and environmental determinations are made on this basis for strata of similar age through the sequences studied." @default.
