- W637100708 abstract "As of 1988, with the introduction of US-83 emission standards for new passenger cars, only vehicles which have low exhaust emissions will be permitted to be driven. Catalytic converters in new passenger vehicles with gasoline engines will decrease exhaust emissions by about 90%. Emissions will also be greatly reduced by heavy-duty vehicles once the ece-r49 standards with their stricter limit values are introduced. Using a calculation to make an emission prognosis for an average vehicle in Austrian traffic, it was shown that emission will be reduced by approximately 70% to 80% by the year 2000 for the exhaust components no-x (nitrogen oxides) and co (carbon monoxide). The emission reduction for trucks and buses is expected to be approximately 40% for smoke and co and 30% for no-x also by the year 2000. This same calculation can be used to make an emission prognosis for a body of traffic which compiles with ece regulations. The calculation method suggested for designing ventilation systems for tunnels takes these reductions in the emission of co, no-x and smoke (turbidity) into consideration. Recommended permissible limit values for carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and the extinction coefficient are provided. Fresh air requirements calculated according to the new method are by and large lower than those calculated with current procedures." @default.
