- W638046415 abstract "Transport has both positive and negative social, environmental and financial effects. The goal of Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) is to achieve transportation systems that maintain or improve human and ecosystem well-being together - not one at the expense of the other. The OECD has recently undertaken a major EST project which included a process of scenario modelling and analysis of actions with the aim of identifying what would be required to achieve EST by 2030. The OECD project identified two major types of actions: (1) technology = providing technologies that contribute to EST while using the transport system in the same way; and (2) demand-side management = changing the way that we use the transport system in ways that contribute to EST. Demand-side management involves influencing the way that we use the transport system, with the aim of promoting transport decision-making and travel behaviour that is more sustainable. The key conclusion from the study was that (1) one-third of the effort needed to meet EST criteria will come from technology; and (2) two-thirds from demand-side management. In other words, the OECD project concluded that relying on technology without addressing traveller behaviour will not be enough to achieve EST. Two-thirds of progress towards EST must come from changing the way that we use the transport system. The OECD findings provide a basis for understanding the potential role and contribution of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to achieving sustainable urban transport. This paper examines the potential contribution of ITS to achieving EST in urban areas, with an emphasis on the role of ITS in demand-side management and influencing traveller behaviour." @default.
