English Abstract: Variable Message Signs (VMS) are a means to provide information about traffic conditions to a large number of drivers at a lower cost than other means to disseminate this information. Contrary to the sophisticated traffic information systems with in-vehicle displays, which need on board computers, communications systems ans payment to service providers, VMS can be seen, with no additional equipment, by drivers passing nearby the signal. When the traffic information is accurate and given on time, the use of VMS can help to select better routs and to reduce traffic congestion. Their uses and application examples. After the introduction, this work describes each of the components of VMS system and list the places where these systems are being used. The work also shows the benefits and cost associated with the use of VMS. The last part of the work presents some general comments and conclusions." @default.
