- W63855983 abstract "view Abstract Citations (68) References (30) Co-Reads Similar Papers Volume Content Graphics Metrics Export Citation NASA/ADS Spectra of Crab-like Pulsars Ho, Cheng Abstract A single-parameter model is constructed for the energetic radiation resulting from the formation of a Crab-type charge depletion region (gap) in the outer magnetosphere of rapidly spinning pulsars. The gap induces a strong electric field parallel to the magnetic field. Electrons and positrons, e(+/-), accelerated by the electric field radiate curvature radiation gamma-rays which are annihilated through photon-photon collision to produce secondary e(+/-). The secondary e(+/-) emit synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattered photons to yield the emergent spectrum. The model employs a self-consistent iterative procedure with one varying parameter, fG, which represents the linear fraction of the outer magnetosphere occupied by the gap. Spectra are calculated for the Crab pulsar and the 50 ms pulsar in the LMC (PSR 0540-693). Good agreement is achieved between the theory and observation for these two pulsars. The pulsed flux from the LMC pulsar a 1 MeV may be marginally detectable by the Gamma-Ray Observatory. The spectrum from a hypothetical 15 ms pulsar left over from SN 1987A is presented and the detectability of pulsation is discussed.
