- W63856045 abstract "The first described, and still the most important, actions of oxytocin are its contractile effects on uterine smooth muscle (Dale 1906) and myoepithelial cells (Ott and Scott 1910). Not unnaturally, therefore, early investigators sought to establish release of the hormone during labor and lactation and found that this was indeed the case (see Tindal 1975). The highest concentrations of the hormone in plasma have been found at these times. Release in the female has also been claimed at other times of the reproductive cycle, including mating. Stimuli for secretion in the male animal are not so well established. Again it has been suggested that release also occurs during mating and that it may be associated with known stimuli for vasopressin, such as increased plasma osmolality and hemorrhage (Forsling and Brimble 1985). As with most hormones, understanding of the mechanisms of release has depended on the availability of sensitive assay techniques. Sensitive bioassays have been available for a number of years (Chard and Forsling 1976), but the number of samples which can be processed is very limited. Release has been monitored in many studies by recording intramammary pressure, but of course this approach is limited to the lactating female. Recordings have been made from putative oxytocin neurons (see chapter by Dreifuss), but again this approach is largely limited to studies in the lactating female." @default.
