- W63896756 abstract "The key features of pasture-based dairy production systems in southeastern Australia and New Zealand (NZ) are considered. The NZ industry has grown substantially over the last 10 years and now produces 15.1 billion tons of milk, while production in the Australian industry peaked in 2001–02 and has since declined to 9.6 billion tons. Information is presented on herd size, production per cow, calving patterns, and the seasonality of milk supply to factories. Seasonal patterns of growth and changes in the nutritive characteristics of pastures in important dairy regions and zones are described, and attention is drawn to the link between differences in milk production per cow and the use of supplementary feeds. The feeding systems in southern Australia are now diverse and there has been a shift from seasonal to split and batch calving, while in NZ seasonal calving in predominately pasture-based systems remains the norm. Factors affecting intake of and selection from pastures are discussed, as are the complexities of different approaches to supplementary feeding. While the Holstein-Friesian remains the predominant breed in NZ, there has been a recent shift to more crossbreds, a trend that seems to be also occurring in Australia." @default.
