- W639102940 abstract "This paper describes a computation procedure and field verification system utilizing deflections on granular materials measured simultaneously on the pavement surface and at various depths within the pavement layers. Measurements are made using a Dynatest falling weight deflectometer on pavements instrumented with multidepth deflectometers (MDD's). The testing programme involves measuring FWD surface and MDD depth deflections at several distances from the load. Two sections were tested and the results analyzed using both linear and nonlinear (finite element) elastic theory. The analysis includes matching the theoretical surface and depth deflections to those measured in the field. The raw data shows clearly that in the thin pavement the deflections measured within the granular base course, at offsets of 20 to 40 inches from the load, are larger than those measured at the surface of the pavement. This result suggests that some dilation or extension is taking place in the base course. For the thin section the linear analysis failed to produce acceptable layer moduli, where acceptability was defined in terms of error per sensor of surface and depth deflection. The use of nonlinear finite elements incorporating dilation effects greatly reduces the error per sensor. With the thick asphalt layers the dilation or extension effect is substantially reduced and both linear and nonlinear procedures produce reasonable results. In general, it appears that nonlinear analysis is better suited for backcalculation of moduli.
