- W639297875 abstract "Many regional agencies model travel demand without feeding assigned travel times back to the trip distribution step. This is a time- and money-saving method, however, bias develops in favor of build alternatives because it underprojects trip lengthening induced by the added capacity. Consequently, emissions and travel costs for new roadway projects are underprojected. The authors outline new methods of modeling travel demand, compare the new methods to the usual methods, and present and discuss the results of the comparison. With full feedback, building new freeway carpool lanes seems less favorable than doing nothing or than expanding light-rail transit, in relation to induced travel. Light-rail system expansion has lower emissions than adding new carpool lanes, with partial feedback, and full feedback increases these differences significantly.
