This study was an evaluation of a computer-assisted instruction (CAI) program, WORDWORKS, being used adjunctively in an English as a second language (ESL) curriculum aimed at communicative competence for international students preparing for academic studies. The evaluation was both formative and summative and qualitative as well as quantitative.WORDWORKS was designed to promote grammar acquisition and structural competency by presenting contextual passages for students to retype, making specified transformations. Feedback highlights problem areas on the computer screen.Method. A criterion-referenced instrument, General Tests of English Language Proficiency (G-TELP) (Level 3, Form 2), was used to measure the English proficiency gains during a four month period between pretest and posttest to test three research hypotheses involving G-TELP mastery scores, grammar scores, and reading scores. The experimental group (N = 10) used WORDWORKS during the research period while the control groups (N = 10) did not.Five experts assessed how well WORDWORKS meets premises and criteria for communicative CALL (computer-assisted language learning) specified by John H. Underwood in Linguistics, Computers, and the Language Teacher, (Newbury House, 1984) and CAI software evaluation criteria provided by M. Tim Grady in Computers in Curriculum and Instruction (ASCD, 1983). Anecdotal information was gathered from students and experts on suggestions for WORDWORKS improvement.Results. WORDWORKS students did not achieve significantly higher gains in grammar and reading scores than did control group subjects. WORDWORKS students did achieve more mastery level scores on the Level 3 G-TELP posttest (3 vs. 2) than the control group.Expert ratings indicated that WORDWORKS, while not specifically designed as a communicative CALL program, met the Underwood and Grady criteria reasonably well. Suggestions were made for improvements to WORDWORKS and its use in the ESL curriculum. Future research into the cognitive style and affective aspects of CALL was recommended." @default.
