- W63961851 abstract "We have measured the fluorescent decay rates of the $^{3}P_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{1}$ states of the ${mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}$ ion in Pr${mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$ and La${mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$ over a wide range of temperatures. At low temperatures the radiative lifetime of the $^{3}P_{0}$ state in La${mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$:1-at.% Pr is 14.7 ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{} 1 ensuremath{mu}sec, while at room temperature in Pr${mathrm{Cl}}_{3}$ the nonradiative lifetime is ensuremath{cong} 0.38 ensuremath{mu}sec. In the dilute crystal the three-phonon-relaxation lifetime of the $^{3}P_{1}ensuremath{rightarrow}^{3}P_{0}$ decay has been determined to be 3.1 ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{} 0.3 ensuremath{mu}sec. We have also set a new much lower limit on the nonradiative-decay lifetimes of the $^{3}P_{2}$ and $^{1}I_{6}$ states of $ensuremath{tau}ensuremath{le}1.5$ nsec. Some major discrepancies between our results and previous work are noted and, in several cases, resolved. A more refined model of the relaxation processes in the $^{3}P$ states is described which qualitatively explains the exceptionally large relaxation rates of the $^{3}P_{2}$ state and the much slower $^{3}P_{1}$ decay rate. We demonstrate that the detailed excited-state composition must be considered to explain the relative magnitudes of relaxation rates." @default.
