- W640242544 abstract "Granitic soil can be divided into coarse, medium and fine grained soil with variable amounts of gravel. In this report the Marshall stability of all gradings of granitic soil mixed with asphalt cement was evaluated and compared with the Asphalt Institute criteria. It was found that coarse and medium grained granitic soil mixed with 7 to 12 % of asphalt cement has a stability in the range of 8892 - 13338 Newton (2000 - 3000 pounds), which is high when compared with the criteria suggested by the Asphalt Institute (2223 Newton). For fine grained granitic soil the asphalt content increases to 12 to 18 % with a stability value of 6624 - 9781 Newton (1400 - 2200 pounds). Tests show that the stability of all gradings of granitic soil mixed with asphalt cement is very high for its use as surfacing course according to the Asphalt Institute criteria. But the asphalt cement content is very high too. It is therefore necessary to select coarse grained granitic soil and to mix it with asphalt cement on the dry side of the stability curve. This will make the stability fall within the limits specified and reduce the amount of asphalt needed. (TRRL)" @default.
