- W640437554 abstract "The current practice in controlling the behaviour of a ship appears to be by using the current state of the ship, together with one of the well established control strategies such as proportional, integral and derivation (PID) fuzzy logic, Sliding mode etc, to get the settings for control surfaces. This approach by its nature, however, indicates that the ship has been disturbed from the desired set position and requires some action in order to correct it. The way forward in this field is to aim for achieving the ability to predict the ship response in advance (ie before the error occurs) and to set the control surfaces at some estimated settings to counteract the effect of disturbance before it has happened. This paper reviews the existing techniques in ship motion control and looks at their shortcomings. It is also concerned with a qualitative description of the requirements of a predictive ship motion control systems and strategy if it were to be adopted, and also how a sea surface estimator can be used in achieving this goal." @default.
