- W640717949 abstract "In 1987, International Road Dynamics (IRD) was contracted by the Transportation Development Centre to develop and test a high precision, low speed Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) system that would accurately weigh vehicle axles and that could be used for enforcement purposes at weigh scale facilities. Such a system would be a tremendous asset to weigh scale operators, allowing them to accurately monitor individual axle loads quickly and economically. A complete prototype weighing system was installed for testing and demonstration at Clavet, a site provided by the Saskatchewan Department of Highways and Transportation. The system was checked against weights obtained from the static scale in use at the site. Performance data was collected over an initial four month period. Two additional systems were installed in British Columbia as part of the Canadian Heavy Vehicle Electronic License Plate program. The BC systems were monitored over a five month period, during which time the systems were subject to a variety of hostile conditions. The results have shown that a low speed WIM System based on bending plate technology and electric resistance strain gauges is feasible as a sorter for enforcement purposes. The standard deviation of error in Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) obtained in limited initial tests on random vehicles, and comparison with static weights, ranged from 2.71 to 6.23 percent. This low speed system is far cheaper than a conventional platform WIM system (about 50% of the cost) and provides comparable accuracies.
