- W640823715 abstract "The main-line track (about 1006 km (625 mi)) of Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) is constructed to modern UIC standards with most of its length consisting of continuously welded rails (CWR) on concrete sleepers. Track maintenance, however, is still based on manual methods. Most activities are carried out by a large number of gang-men equipped with traditional manual tools. Despite the availability of 6 tamping machines, the role of mechanization is not significant due to the absence of planning. This article presents the results of a research study carried out in order to determine a new policy, based on mechanization and planning, that would prove suitable for the specific needs, local conditions, and budget constraints at SRO. The aim is to ensure an effective monitoring of track condition by means of mechanized methods, accurate and objective processing of collected data with the aid of appropriate data analysis systems, and efficient track maintenance based on mechanization and planning. Cost analyses show that this could result in a significant reduction in track maintenance costs." @default.
