- W641179705 abstract "This High-Speed Rail (HSR) Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project evaluated the feasibility of using high-porosity aluminum foam materials and structures to improve the crashworthiness and safety of high-speed rail equipment. An additional goal was to identify other potential advantages of using aluminum foams in locomotive and passenger car structures. Metal foams are produced using a powder metallurgy process for producing closed-cell metal foams from aluminum, steel, and other metals and alloys. Because of their very low mass density, controlled porosity, and closed cell structure, metal foams - especially aluminum - are finding engineering uses as lightweight stiffeners in automobiles; energy absorption for crash management in vehicles, ballistic protection, and mine blast mitigation; vibration damping; and sound/thermal insulation. Aluminum foam structures can be designed to provide lightweight, high specific stiffness, energy absorption, reduced thermal conductivity, and vibration damping. A fabrication process for producing aluminum foams and incorporating these foams inside extruded aluminum and 304 stainless steel tubes was developed. Axial compression tests were performed to demonstrate the advantages of using aluminum foam core inserts for increasing the crush energy absorption compared to empty aluminum and stainless steel tubes. The aluminum foam inserts increased the mechanical stability of the foam-filled profiles and prevented the profile from instantaneous buckling. Specific energy absorption values were determined for each of the experimental axial compression test samples. The use of aluminum foam inserts increased the specific energy absorption of both aluminum and 304 stainless steel tubes by as much as 38%." @default.
