- W641370892 abstract "This article addresses the following questions concerning air bags: How do they work? Which cars have air bags? And, what are the diagnostic capabilities of the system should the dash-mounted warning light indicate a problem? Although there are slight differences among air bag systems (mainly in the electronics and the number and position of the sensors), the basic components used are virtually identical across the board. All systems have an inflator module located in the steering wheel hub. When an igniter squib detonates, it generates a thermal reaction which, in turn ignites an extremely fast-burning sodium azide-based propellant placed in the inflator. As the propellant burns, it releases a large quantity of nitrogen gas, which causes the air bag to inflate and emerge from the module. The entire process takes about 50 milliseconds. Multiple sensors in the engine and passenger compartments detect an impact. There are two types of sensors--a normal crash sensor and a sensor. Air bag deployment won't take place unless inputs from at least one of the crash sensors and a safing sensor are received simultaneously. Chrysler, Ford, and GM cars that have air bags are identified, and disarming procedures are discussed. GM disarming procedures differ from those for Fords and Chryslers." @default.
