- W642177908 abstract "It appears that the relationship between the probability of a household being car-owning and gross household income deflated by the retail price index had remained approximately constant between 1969-1975, but that around the last quarter of 1976, there has been a significant increase. In addition, over the whole period 1969-1979, there has been a marked rise in the proportion of multi-car owners at a given real income. The result of this is that the model proposed by the authors in 1978 has not demonstrated the required temporal stability. This paper, of a largely speculative nature, examines the changes which could be the cause of such a marked shift in car-owning behaviour. Emphasis is placed on household expenditure patterns and price changes. The 3 groups which together account for about 52% of total expenditure (food, housing and transport and vehicles) are examined in turn. This study led to the conclusions that: (1) there is a remarkable stability to the expenditure patterns for broad commodity groups, once the effects of inflation and changes in income have been removed; (2) there is a significant discrepancy between the recorded data for expenditure on new car purchase and the exogenous data on new registrations and car prices, thus highlighting the intervention by companies in the new car market from 1976 onwards; and (3) there exists an inter-relation of car ownership and car use.
